Instruments for Becoming
Instruments for Becoming is a body of kinetic and sonic sculptures built from exposed mechanisms, salvaged materials, and electronics. Each system runs its own continuous process, generating sound and motion from the physical behaviour of its materials: the resistance within the system, the torque of a motor, the way a mechanism settles into or strains against its own rhythm. This is a practice rooted in jugaad (making do), deep listening and following material logic and visibility—a personal experience with sound: learning to listen not just to music or language, but to the physical world as a site of continuous sonic activity. You can see where the sound comes from and what it costs the object to make it. Staying in the field of attention of these instruments, the interaction between listener and instrument starts a process of becoming, learning new ways of attention and listening to the sound of the room itself—or diving deeper into the mind and listening to the thoughts within. Each cycle is different depending on who stays and for how long. Materials Used Spinny Sticks: pencils, metal wire, 3D printed discs, wood beam, steel rods, Arduino UNO, 5V 70A power supply, type 130 DC motors, MOSFET PWM controllers, jumper cables, wires, tape, screw hooks, security wire, carabiners. Rain Reminders: black rice, mung beans, PVC pipe, screws, wood beam, steel rods, Arduino Nano, 24V power supply, step-down voltage converter, NEMA 23 stepper motor, 04C gears and chain, pipe clamp, round jute mat. Listening: headphones, audio splitters, wood blocks, AA batteries, battery case, headphone amplifier module.
